JMP is bundled with SAS Enterprise Miner in both 9.2 & 9.3

Oct
10

I blogged a while ago about some changes to the SAS licensing with SAS adding a few more capabilities at no extra charge (didn’t even need to buy the steak knives ;-)

One of the things I mentioned was that JMP is now bundled as part of SAS Enterprise Miner (to match your EM client license).

But I wasn’t sure if it covered SAS 9.2 and 9.3 or just 9.3.

Just had confirmation today from SAS Contracts that its is bundled in both SAS 9.2 and 9.3.

You may need to go and ask for a separate download key as it didn’t come in the standard 9.2 download I just did, but ask away cause its yours!

SAS 9.1 > SAS 9.3 making it easy

Jun
04
Fiona McNeill just posted a comment on my blog post about my guess that SAS 9.3 will play peekaboo just as we are in the middle of finishing the SAS 9.2 install.

She commented

“Just to clarify, you will be able to go from SAS 9.1.3 directly to SAS 9.3 – without having to do the interim release installation”

I had heard mentioned that you would be able to jump across from 9.1 to 9.3 and miss out the 9.2 upgrade, but great to have it officially confirmed!  Its amazing how many times I had been asked this by customers.

Thanks Fiona.

SAS 9.3 to be released in July 2011 (maybe ;-)

Jun
02

Well this may just be a rumor but at the excellent SAS Users Group of New Zealand (SUNZ) quarterly meeting (yes I did present ;-) it was mentioned that SAS 9.3 maybe released in July of this year.

No details on whether it will just be foundation, or foundation and platform components.  Or whether it will be all operating systems or just a subset.

At SAS Global Forum in Vegas this year it was mooted (cool word that) that Q3 was the likely release date, so I assumed that meant September.  But July is still Q3 and SAS 9.3 did seem pretty much ready at the demo stands.

So we will know in either 29 days or 59 days (remember i’m based in sunny NZ, we see the sun first-ish)

SAS Licensing/Bundling Changes, 9.3 and others

Apr
08

There seems to be a lot of movement in the the way SAS are bundling and licensing the multitude of SAS solutions and products at the moment.

Here are the changes I think I heard before and during the SAS Global Forum (as always please check with your SAS Account team to confirm the details)

  • SAS Data Integration Server now includes the ability to use Dataflux for profiling only (used to have to have eDI to use any dataflux)
  • SAS eDI Server 9.3 will move to bundling Dataflux Data Management studio rather than the dfPower studio that is bundles in 9.2.
  • SAS has released a AMO only bundle (SAS® Office Analytics for Midsize Business), enabling you to use AMO without needing to license the Business Intelligence server (BI Server) and it even bundles Enterprise Guide and STAT in it as well!
  • Some functions from SAS Graph/ODS are being bundled with SAS Foundation (Base) without the need to license SAS Graph
  • JMP is bundled with Enterprise Miner (Not sure if its only with 9.3 or all versions)

Those are the ones I can remember hearing or reading about, if I find anymore Ill update the post and of course if you know of any changes comment away!

AMO 5.1/9.3 – Some nice features comming

Apr
07

Stopped by the AMO stand at SAS Global Forum 2011 and had a quick look at the new features coming out.

Things that took my interest:

  • AMO 5.1 will work with SAS 9.2 & 9.3, wahoo that will make upgrades easier
(although any new feature that requires 9.3 will be grayed out if you are accessing a 9.2 backend)
  • In excel you can make a excel cell the basis for a Stored Process prompt, so that means you can setup custom drop downs in the Excel sheet that drives what the STP brings back (i.e month, region etc).  Think about the flexibility that will allow in building excel frontends to SAS
  • AMO 4.3 supports Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 & 2010, AMO 5.1 will only support Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010.  The main reason is the major use of ribbons in AMO 5.1.
(and before you complain Office 2003 is over 8 years old remember!)

Bring on Q3 – 2011!

SAS 9.3 – Planned for release in Q3 2011

Apr
06

SAS Global Forum 2011 in Vegas seems to be all about SAS 9.3.

Interesting for me as a number of customers in New Zealand are still on SAS 9.1 and yet to upgrade to SAS 9.2.

The other thing that is interesting is that while SAS are talking about new SMC 9.3 capability (and in fact a new flash/flex based version of SMC) , new versions of DI studio, Forecast Studio, EG 5.1, AMO xx (havent been to that stand yet) and brand new (ground breaking they said) high performance computing capability, the thing I have missed is the rollout plans for SAS 9.3.

I remember with SAS 9.1 there was a lot of positioning around the Foundation release, then platform (BI, DI etc) and then solutions, this time there is no positioning, just SAS 9.3 is due Q3 2011.  (Seem to remember the same roll out for SAS 9.2 but that may just be jetlag catching up with me)

I’m undecided if this is a good thing ot not (the lack of positioning not SAS 9.3 released in Q3 2011)

I did manage to confirm that they are planning to release Foundation and Platform components (eBI, eDI, EM etc) in the same Q3 release so that is good.

Now I wonder if I will need to go on a new SAS Migration course this year then….

SAS 9.3 and 9.4 and 9………

Jul
18

It is always interesting how quickly answers from Tech support move to fixed in the next release once a new release is out.

Some of the peopl I talk to regular are telling me they are sometimes getting fixed in SAS 9.3 in response to issues now.

I came across this note today on the SAS Support site:

http://support.sas.com/techsup/pcn/openvms93.html

Product Change Notifications from SAS

Statement of support for Windows on Itanium and Open VMS Itanium

April 2010 Due to changing market conditions, SAS 9.3 will drop support for Windows on Itanium (W64) and Open VMS Itanium (IVMS, VMI) operating systems. SAS will continue to assist customers in migrating to other operating systems. Note: SAS 9.2 will continue to support these operating systems.

Modified Technical Support

Upon release of SAS 9.4, Technical Support will be provided at Level B and will follow the schedule as outlined in the Technical Support Policies.”

So there you go SAS 9.3 and SAS 9.4!

But the good thing is that SAS are giving customers a good heads up on the future direction of the product and associated platform support and that is a good thing.
