If you use LSF be afraid, be very very afraid

Interesting note over on the SAS Support site here:

http://support.sas.com/techsup/pcn/index.html

At the bottom it says:

Platform Suite for SAS (LSFSUITE)

Effective September 1, 2009 Platform Suite for SAS (“LSFSUITE”) will no longer be included in the price of previously licensed SAS solution or technology packages. Customers who wish to continue use of LSFSUITE, will have until 90 days from the expiration date of their SAS solution or technology package to license this product at then-current renewal fees. This will be accomplished by executing the necessary licensing documents for LSFSUITE and paying the applicable then-current renewal fees (“migration plan”). Please call 1-800-727-0025 to initiate the process of establishing a license for LSFSUITE prior to expiration of the migration plan. No further action is required for those customers who do not wish to take advantage of this migration plan.

So as I read this if you have LSF in one of your bundles that you currently pay renewals for, then you need to use the “migrate plan” and pay the LSF portion of the renewals to Platform Computing.

No mention on what happens to your SAS renewals though.

Let me know if you find out.

  1. To avoid confusion SAS will modify the note on SAS Technical Support Website. Platform Suite for SAS (a.k.a. LSFSUITE) is a SAS product. Beginning with their next renewal, effective September 1st, customers need to license Platform Suite for SAS from SAS at current renewal rates.

  2. When doing some investigation into redesign of our architecture, I spoke at length with SAS regarding LSF. The ‘OEM’ version of LSF that is licensed through SAS will only run SAS programs. If you schedule another type of job LSF limits the run time to 30 seconds. A fully functional version of LSF comes with a perpetual license and will cost you about 100K. If you want to keep running the OEM version from SAS you will begin having to pay a separate renewal fee.

  3. Thanks Suzanne.

Great comment as I (think I) finally understand the difference between the LSF versions and the license changes about to happen.

Interesting about the 30 second rule, never knew that, but cool idea to stop the OEM users getting the full capability.

I remember when LSF used to be bundled in eBI and DI servers licenses and then they were removed from being bundled to being an additional/optional license option. (cant remember if it was dropped from BI or DI first)

I wonder how many sites this license change will effect?
